non-fiction editing for authors and publishers
When you work with Eaves Editorial, you can expect an edit that not only smooths your text for your audience, but does so without sacrificing your unique voice and style.
What you can expect…
Material I work on
I work across a variety of trade non-fiction and creative-non fiction categories. These include memoirs and autobiographies, biographies, self-help and personal development, wellbeing, theology, spirituality, mythology and folklore, and nature writing.

Copyediting
Copyediting is a technical, sentence-level edit. The “three C’s” are addressed in this edit – clarity, consistency, and correctness. Corrections will be made, from spelling and grammar to punctuation, inconsistencies, and factual errors. The clarity of the text will be examined, too – any ambiguities or unclear sentences and arguments will be flagged with suggestions for improvement.
An industry-standard style guide will be applied so your text adheres to professional book publishing standards. For US English, this will be The Chicago Manual of Style. For UK English, New Hart’s Rules will be used.
This edit prepares your book for the next stage in the editorial process by examining formatting elements and marking these up correctly, too.
A style sheet will be created for you alongside the main edit. This is an industry-standard practice that keeps track of all the editorial decisions made by the copyeditor.

Proofreading
Proofreading is the final stage in the editorial process before publishing. It catches any last errors. It’s a meticulous, slow, and close read of the text.
However, it’s far more than just a quick read-through. Proofreading is an in-depth final check, looking at not only the text itself but any layout issues such as awkward word breaks, problems with headings, maps, or diagrams, incorrect page numbers, and so on.
It can be done before a book is formatted for publication, or after – though most layout issues can only be caught properly once the book is formatted for publishing.
Rates
Before providing you with a quote, I will request a short sample of your manuscript. This allows me to put together a tailored quote, as no two authors will be the same in terms of the level of edits required. If you aren’t sure whether you need copyediting or proofreading, I can make a recommendation based on your sample.
If you would like an idea of what to expect, my rates are typically in line with the suggested minimum rates put forward by the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading, and The Editorial Freelancers Association’s editorial rates data.
When I quote, prices will be provided in British pounds (£), as I’m located in the UK, but I work with authors from all over the globe and I’m happy to accept international payments, including from authors in the States.
Sample edits can be provided on request. These are charged at £60 for a 2,000-word sample, deductible from the total quote if you choose to work with me on the rest of the book.
For publishers, I’m happy to discuss the scope of the work and agree on a project fee.
