non-fiction editing for authors, publishers, and businesses

When you work with Eaves Editorial, you’ll receive an edit that not only smooths and corrects your text, but does so without sacrificing your unique voice and your message.

What you can expect…

  • Meticulous work. My editing is backed by nine years of experience working in the publishing industry as an editor and proofreader, on over 200 books and on technical content.
  • Industry standards. I work with industry style guides, which are standards used in publishing to ensure your writing is consistent and professional.
  • Knowledge of both US and UK English. I’ll make sure your writing is in line with the conventions of whichever option you choose.
  • Constructive editorial commentary and queries designed to help you improve your text and guide you in any rewrites or revisions.

Material I work on

I edit professional text for businesses as well as non-fiction for authors and publishers. Subject areas include:

  • Business and tech: Entrepreneurship, freelancing, business, information technology.
  • Trade non-fiction: Memoir, biography and autobiography, self-help, personal development.
  • Humanities and culture: Literature, mythology.

Copyediting

Copyediting is a technical, sentence-level edit looking at consistency, clarity, and correctness – the three C’s of editing! This involves tasks such as correcting grammar, spelling and punctuation, checking numbering or cross-references, light fact-checking, comparing text with diagrams, addressing contradictions, and so on.

The edit may also address intended meaning (and whether this is being clearly expressed), ambiguities, vagueness, word choice, clunky sentences, repetition, and tonal shifts. (Some editors call this a medium or heavy copyedit and others refer to it as line editing.)

An industry-standard style guide will also be applied during a copyedit so your text adheres to professional publishing standards.

Copyediting can also get your text ready for the next stage in the editorial process by preparing typographical elements such as headings and subheadings, making sure these are all clearly identified.

For book manuscripts, a style sheet will be created. This is an industry-standard practice and keeps track of all the editorial decisions made.

Proofreading

Proofreading is the final editorial stage before publishing. It catches any last errors. It’s a meticulous, slow, and close read of the text.

However, it’s far more than just a read-through for spelling mistakes. Proofreading is an in-depth final check, looking at not only the text itself but any layout issues that may cause issues on publication, such as awkward word breaks over lines, problems with headings, maps, or diagrams, incorrect page numbers, font problems, missing elements, and so on.

It can be done before a piece of work is formatted for publication, or after – though most layout issues can only be caught properly once the text is formatted for publishing.

Rates

Before providing you with a quote, I will request a short sample of your work. This allows me to put together a tailored quote, as no two texts will be the same in terms of the level of edits required. If you aren’t sure whether you need copyediting or proofreading, I can make a recommendation based on your sample.

If you would like an idea of what to expect, my rates are typically in line with the suggested minimum rates put forward by the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading, and The Editorial Freelancers Association’s editorial rates data.

When I quote, prices will be provided in British pounds (£), but I work with clients from all over the globe and accept international payments, including from writers and businesses in the States.

Sample edits can be provided on request. These are charged at £60 ($80) for a short sample, deductible from the total quote if you choose to work with me.

For publishers and businesses, I’m also happy to discuss the scope of the work and agree on a project fee.
